Habitat type and complexity drive fish assemblages in a tropical seascape

چکیده
Inshore marine seascapes support a diversity of interconnected habitats and are an important focus for biodiversity conservation. This study examines the importance habitat attributes to fish assemblages across mosaic inshore habitats: coral reefs, rocky macroalgae beds sand/rubble beds. Fishes benthic were surveyed at 34 sites around continental islands central Great Barrier Reef using baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS). Species richness was influenced foremost by type also structural complexity within types. The most speciose occurred in reef with high complexity, provided presence bommies/overhangs, boulders rock crevices. Nonetheless, supported unique species, therefore contributed overall seascape. Most trophic groups had positive associations which predictor abundance piscivorous fishes mobile planktivores. There significant differentiation among habitats, notable exception reefs. overlapped substantially between 60% common despite cover being lower on suggests that, many substrates can provide equivalent structure, emphasizing providing refuges, highlighting contribution reefs provision tropical seascapes. results this emerging recognition collective value mosaics ecosystems.

Habitat Specialization in Tropical Continental Shelf Demersal Fish Assemblages
The implications of shallow water impacts such as fishing and climate change on fish assemblages are generally considered in isolation from the distribution and abundance of these fish assemblages in adjacent deeper waters. We investigate the abundance and length of demersal fish assemblages across a section of tropical continental shelf at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, to identify fish and...
متن کاملHabitat Configuration Alters Herbivory across the Tropical Seascape
There exists increasing evidence that top-down ecological processes, such as herbivory are key in controlling marine ecosystems and their community structure. Herbivory has the potential to be altered by numerous environmental and ecological factors that operate at a variety of temporal and spatial scales, one such spatial factor is the influence of the marine landscape. We know little about ho...

Snow-fed River Pinder -a tributary of River Alaknanda in central Himalaya was explored for fish assemblages and habitat specificity. Altogether 27 fish species were reported from three orders, four families and nine genera. Cypriniformes order was dominating followed by Siluriformes and Salmoniformes. Shannon-Weiner diversity index (3.09 to 4.10) and Simpson index of diversity (0.81 to 0.92) of...

متن کاملIncreasing habitat complexity on seawalls: Investigating large‐ and small‐scale effects on fish assemblages
The construction of artificial structures in the marine environment is increasing globally. Eco-engineering aims to mitigate the negative ecological impacts of built infrastructure through designing structures to be multifunctional, benefiting both humans and nature. To date, the focus of eco-engineering has largely been on benefits for benthic invertebrates and algae. Here, the potential effec...
